Google Sheets Dark Mode — a real dark theme, not inverted colors

Dark grid, dark menus, dark formula bar — while your cell colors stay exactly the colors you chose. Free, private, one click.

Short answer: Google Sheets has no built-in dark mode in the browser. This free extension darkens the grid and the whole interface — and unlike color-inverting tools, your color-coded cells keep their real colors.

Before | after

Late-night spreadsheets, minus the glare.

Sheets is the worst offender: a wall of white cells at 11 pm. This extension darkens the grid, menus and formula bar — and keeps green cells green. Works on Chrome, Edge, Brave and other Chromium browsers.

The problem with generic dark mode

In a spreadsheet, color is data.

Filter-based dark mode tools invert everything — including your conditional formatting. Green becomes magenta, red becomes cyan. This extension darkens the interface, not your data.

✕ Color-inverting tools

“Done”, “In progress”, “At risk” — all meaningless once colors flip.

Your color-coded statuses, conditional formatting and charts get inverted along with the interface. The sheet is dark — and unreadable.

✓ Purpose-built for Sheets

Same colors, dark surroundings — your coding system still works.

The grid and UI go dark while cell fill colors keep their meaning. For pixel-perfect color work, switch to “menus only” scope.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Does Google Sheets have a dark mode?
No. Google Sheets has no built-in dark mode in the browser — the mobile app has one, the desktop web app doesn't. This extension adds the missing dark theme on Chrome, Edge, Brave and other Chromium browsers.
Will my cell colors change?
No. Unlike color-inverting tools, the extension darkens the interface and leaves cell fill colors, conditional formatting and charts accurate. For color-critical work, “menus only” scope leaves the sheet itself untouched.
Is it free?
Yes. The core dark mode is free — no account, no trial countdown, no bait-and-switch.
Does it work on Google Docs too?
Yes — same extension covers Docs and Slides, each with its own toggle. See the main page →
Is it safe? What can it see?
It only runs on docs.google.com — it can't read your spreadsheets, your other tabs or any other site. No analytics, no tracking, no data leaves your browser.
Does it work on Mac, Windows and Chromebook?
Yes — anywhere Chrome or a Chromium browser runs. On mobile, the Google Sheets app already has a native dark mode.
What about Firefox?
A Firefox version is planned — Sheets dark mode searches on Firefox are real and almost nobody serves them.
Why do other dark mode extensions break Sheets?
Most invert the entire page — which inverts your data colors too. Some only darken the top bar. Purpose-built dark mode treats the grid, the UI and your colors as three separate things.
Are there other dark mode extensions for Google Sheets?
A few — but most either invert your cell colors, only cover Docs, or darken just the top bar. Sheets-only tools can't help your Docs or Slides. This extension does all three editors, keeps your data colors real, and asks for nothing but access to docs.google.com.
